Malaysia is located in Southeast Asia. It consists of 13 states and 3 federal territories. It is separated by the South China Sea into Peninsular Malaysia with 11 states and 2 Federal territories and East Malaysia with 2 states and 1 federal territories. The Capital city of Malaysia is Kuala Lumpur and the seat of the federal government is at Putrajaya. It has a population of 30 million people.
The country is multi ethnic, multicultural and multilingual. Half of its population is ethnically malay with large minorities of Malaysian Chinese, Malaysian Indian, Indigenous people and others. Its official religion is Sunni Islam.
The head of the State if the King, known as the Yang Dipertuan Agung. He is an elected monarch chosen by the hereditary rulers of the 9 states every five years. The head of the government is the prime minister.
Its first British Territories were known as the Straits Settlement. Thee territories in Peninsular Malaysia were first united as Malayan Union in 1946. It was restructured as Federation of Malaya in 1948 and got its independence on 31st August, 1957. Malaya united with North Borneo, Sarawak and Singapore on 16th September, 1963 to become Malaysia. On 9th August, 1965 Singapore left Malaysia.
Malaysia is the only country on both the Asian Mainland and the Malay Archipelago. Tanjung Piai is located in the Southern State of Johor , it is the southernmost tip of Continental Asia. The Straits of Malacca is the most important thoroughfares in global commerce carrying about 40 per cent of the world’s trade.
Malaysia is also have a few World Heritage Sites which are protected by the UNESCO which are The Kinabalu National Park, Gunung Mulu National Park which is the largest cave system in the world and Sipadan Island which is a sanctuary for its marine life.
Malaysia is also famous for its biodiversity of rainforest, wildlife, flora and fauna. Its rainforest is believed to be millions of years old. Its also has the growing of the largest flower in the world that is the Raffelsia. It is also home to a few endangered species of animals such as the Malayan Tiger, The Tapir hornbills and Seahawk sea turtles. Apart from the rainforest Malaysia also have large mangrove swamps and a large amount of Pear forest.
The Malaysian traditional art was mainly centered in carving, weaving and silversmithing. It ranges from hand woven baskets from rural area to silver art for the Malay Courts. Some of the artworks are ornamental kris, beetle nut sets (Tepak Sirih) and batik and songket fabrics . Indigenous people are famous for their wooden mask. It is also famous for its kite making, specially the Wau Bulan which is also one of the finest art work.
Malaysian food is a mixture of multiethnic. The food has an influence of Malay, Chinese, Indian, Sumatran and Javanese culture that is because the country was part of the ancient spice route. But the famous food that everyone would try is the Nasi Lemak and Teh Tarik.
Malaysia has an infrastructure that is developing at a rapid rate. It is also home to some famous landmarks such as the Petronas Twin Tower which was the tallest building till recently and also has the largest roundabout in the world at Putrajaya. Malaysia has also become the second home for many people in the world.
